Regret-
After Angelina finished the tale, William looked at me. “You just gave it away? Just like that?” he asked like he couldn’t believe it.
“Of course I did,” I replied. “Angelina is worth far more than a silly trinket.”
“An ambush isn’t good. I could try to get your brooch back.”
“It’s no big deal. Honestly, I’m sure that brooch is long gone.”
“It might be closer than you think.”
“What do you mean?”
“Nothing.” William looked away. Angelina was giving him a ‘don’t tell’ look that I didn’t understand. I picked up my fork and started playing with my food again.
“I’ll be back,” Angelina said, heading to the restroom.
William cleared his throat. “Do you regret giving up that brooch? It must have meant a lot to you,” he said.
“Absoulutly not,” I replied. “I would give everything I own for her if I had to.”
William nodded slowly. Then Angelina came back. “We’re a bit late for that play.”
“I don’t really feel like going to see it now,” I said.
“Then why don’t I give you two a ride home?” William offered.
“Yes please,” I gratefully accepted.
“I need to run to the store real quick. I can walk.” Angelina said, and left the restaurant.
I followed William outside to his black Chevy. I opened the door and admired the soft looking chair cover. To my surprise, there was a single CandyLand one red square card, lying on the driver’s seat. William snatched it up, put it in his pocket and told me that he had to make a quick call.
I settled in his car and watched the people in the cafe as I waited for William to return. He returned after almost fifteen minutes. “Sorry about that,” he said. “I forgot that my cousin told me to call him before eleven tonight.”
“It’s no problem,” I said understandingly.
He flashed that charming smile at me again, and drove the short distance to my apartment, let me out, then drove away with a goodnight. I was practically floating.
I watched him as he drove out of sight. That’s when I realized that Angelina was running toward me. Her dress was ripped her her hair had fallen out of her hairdo. She only slowed a little when she reached me, panting hard as she held out my brooch and stuffed it into my hand.
“Run,” she said. Angelina grabbed my other hand and pulled me along.
