Parted by Death
Bright colors fade to midnight black.
A man sat by his wife
As she lay in her bed,
Nearing the end of her life.
“I’ll always love you, although…”
She let out one final breath.
Then out of the shadow
Came the figure of Death.
The young man saw the dark coming
He said, “You cannot have her!”
But Death ignored his plea
Took the woman, then left in a blur.
The man cried himself to sleep.
“Not her, my innocent dove;
I won't let Death keep her;
For she is the only one I love.”
As he slept he dreamt that
He was on a mission.
Nothing could stop
His determined vision.
He’d fight with all his might,
He’d walk through with his pain,
Til he reached the edge of the world
And entered Death’s domain.
He walked on til morning
But with no end in sight,
He stopped in dismay,
Realizing he was losing this fight.
The man was now exhausted,
So he thought he was dreaming
When he found himself in the
Presence of a heavenly being.
The angel flew with the man;
They landed upon a cloud.
There he saw his lovely Anne
And he shouted happily aloud
They ran to each other to embrace.
“I’ve always loved you, even though…”
But his foot went through the cloud
And he fell to the earth below
Before he hit the ground
And lost his life,
He woke with a frightened sound
And found himself still without his wife.
